It was evident that Makhlouf was directly blaming individuals close to the Assad regime who had been involved in suppression through arrests and torture.

Since last Thursday, tensions have escalated in the coastal areas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the mountainous regions. Violent confrontations between the loyalist remnants of the old regime and security forces have resulted in approximately 700 deaths so far.
