The Global Environment Facility (GEF), a multilateral financial mechanism created in 1991, provides grants and concessional funding to countries for projects addressing key global environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change mitigation and adaptation, deforestation, land degradation, and more. Operating as an independently managed financial organization, the GEF is the financial mechanism for five international environmental conventions.
The GEF's Secretariat, operating under the World Bank's Vice-Presidential Unit (VPU), consists of around 100 professionals and administrative support staff. It coordinates a wide range of activities aimed at managing portfolios, monitoring results, and implementing policy and guidelines related to sustainable development.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a Data Analyst with the GEF Policy and Operations Division, you will support the monitoring and portfolio management of GEF’s projects. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Data Architecture & Tools: Designing and automating protocols, tools, and overall data architecture to measure GEF’s results and portfolio progress.
- Report Preparation: Preparing essential public reports, such as the GEF Corporate Scorecard and Country and Agency Factsheets.
- Strengthening Indicators: Reviewing and enhancing data collection, measurement protocols, and indicators.
- Data Analysis: Supporting analytical work, including quantitative and qualitative assessments of GEF projects and their results.
- Collaborative Systems: Contributing to the implementation of IT systems like the GEF Portal, working with IT teams on templates, testing, and system updates.
- Learning & Innovation: Reviewing lessons from Mid-Term and Terminal Evaluations to support adaptive management and innovation.
- Analytics for Fundraising: Providing analytics required to support replenishment negotiations and fundraising activities for the GEF.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: A Master's degree in Environmental Economics, Data Science, Sustainable Development, or related fields, plus 4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience: Proven expertise in data analysis, environmental economics, and policy analysis.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in Excel, PowerBI, R, Python, and Geospatial analysis. Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau is a plus.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas concisely and clearly.
- Critical Thinking: Proven ability to think critically and quickly learn new operational models.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and deliver high-quality outputs.
