نشرت صحيفة “جيروزاليم بوست” يوم الخميس تقريرًا يفيد بأن تصريحات المسؤولين الإسرائيليين حول نية الجيش الإسرائيلي البقاء في جنوب لبنان بعد انتهاء مهلة الستين يومًا المنصوص عليها في اتفاق وقف إطلاق النار مع حزب الله قد أثارت قلق الإدارة الأميركية.
رسائل تحذيرية من واشنطن لتل أبيب
وبحسب الصحيفة، نقلت مصادر قريبة من الرئيس الأميركي المنتخب دونالد ترامب رسالة تحذيرية واضحة لمسؤولين إسرائيليين، مفادها أن بقاء القوات الإسرائيلية في جنوب لبنان لفترة أطول من المتفق عليها قد يعرّض الاتفاق للخطر.
وأكدت الرسالة: “لا نريد انهيار اتفاق وقف إطلاق النار في لبنان”.
على الرغم من ذلك، حاولت إسرائيل إقناع واشنطن بأن انسحاب الجيش اللبناني كان بطيئًا وغير كافٍ، مما يجعل بقاء القوات الإسرائيلية ضرورة لضمان الاستقرار الأمني في المنطقة.

U.S. Warns Israel Against Extending Stay in Southern Lebanon
On Thursday, The Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli officials' statements about the army's intention to remain in southern Lebanon beyond the 60-day deadline outlined in the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah have raised concerns in Washington.
Clear Warning from Washington
According to sources close to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, American officials delivered a clear warning to Israeli counterparts, stating: “We don’t want the Lebanon ceasefire agreement to collapse.”
Despite the warning, Israeli officials unsuccessfully tried to convince the Americans that the slow and insufficient deployment of the Lebanese Army necessitates the continued presence of Israeli forces in the region to ensure stability.
Ceasefire Agreement Under American Mediation
In November, U.S. President Joe Biden announced a 60-day ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, describing it as a step toward a permanent truce. Biden emphasized that the agreement aims to prevent Hezbollah from threatening Israel’s security again and stressed the importance of synchronized Israeli withdrawal with the strengthening of the Lebanese Army and UN forces in southern Lebanon.
The truce officially took effect on November 27, with Israel required to withdraw by January 26, 2025.
Challenges in Implementation
Despite the agreement's stipulations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the deal allows Israel “freedom of movement” in southern Lebanon to address potential threats. He also noted that the agreement helps isolate Hamas in Gaza and allows Israel to focus on confronting the Iranian threat.
With the deadline approaching, Israeli media outlets, including Yedioth Ahronoth, reported that Israel is considering informing Washington of its inability to withdraw if Lebanon does not fulfill its commitments under the agreement.
